In 2018, we created our first annual Maroon Poetry Festival at the historic Tacolcy Center in Liberty City. There, the Last Poets, Sonia Sanchez, Emory Douglas, and the late Ntozake Shange performed and met with local youth poets and organizers. We honored their commitment to truth telling and transformed a public park into a physical manifestation of the world we are organizing for. Everything we bring to poetry - meaning, purpose, and attention to detail - was brought to life through healing spaces, soul food, local business vendors, stunning stage design, an art gallery, and curated kids games.
